Mem Fox’s ‘Rather Wonderful’ Idea for ‘This Weird Time’

Mem Fox AM is a national ‘treasure’. Her stories have delighted families for decades. You might be familiar with the international bestseller Possum Magic. Mem’s book Wilfrid Gordon McDonald Partridge is my favourite. I am not alone. Mem says that Wilfrid Gordon is the book adults love the most. It’s special in a Time & Space context because, our hero, Wilfrid Gordon, ‘a small boy who wasn’t very old either’, looks for ‘memories’ for his friend Miss Nancy in the old people’s home next door.

A Reverse Birthday Present

Today is my birthday. Sunday the 29th of March 2020.

The world has changed hasn’t it? So let’s make a change to the way birthdays work. Today I’d like to give you a present where I read you my favourite picture story book. It’s about treasured memories. And if you have little kids in your home, there is an activity on the screen at the end for you all to share your ‘treasures’. I reckon the activity works too for people who consider themselves kids at heart.

Time & Space at Home

Last Thursday night a tiny piece of history happened here in the Time & Space shed and in seven homes in the Shepparton region. Seven Year 7 boys and their mums (or female mentors) from Notre Dame College joined in to a Zoom meeting. We were scheduled to gather in the Mons Bones Hall there in Knight Street for their annual Mother and Son night. Last Monday, Emma Reynoldson, Deputy Principal, contacted us to say that the school needed to postpone due to the rapidly changing situation with the Covid19 pandemic.

Notre Dame College Father and Daughter Night (done a little bit differently)

Hi Everyone,

Earlier today I recorded a video discussion with Mr John Cortese Principal so that we could send a message to the Yr 7 girls and their dad or mentor at Notre Dame College. We both shared our treasured items as we both have daughters! Tonight would have been the night that Notre Dame College had had their Father-Daughter Time & Space session at school in the Mons Bones Hall. The College has postponed the event until later in the year and we will notify you of those changed dates very soon.

The Big Treasure in the Car Park

At a Time & Space event, participants are asked to bring along a ‘treasure’, a memento that symbolises something special in the relationship between the young person and their parent or mentor. They keep it wrapped up as a surprise from each other.
